My third article published at IntenseSchool.com – Creating and Configuring VMware Clusters

I am really excited that my third blog post has been published at Intenseschool.com. Back in May 2014 my first article got published on “ESXi and Virtual machine patch management” and you can find my blog post here and in November my second article published link here.

Excited

My third article on “Creating and Configuring VMware Clusters” can be found here. Hope you find my article’s useful, informative and feel free to comment.

ESXi 5.5 host error “vim.fault.NoHost” during rescan.

Summary : During my preparation for the VCAP DCA exam and upon a rescan activity on the host it error out “vim.fault.NoHost”. I had not seen this error before in my lab nor in production.

Solution: I googled and found few useful links, they have occurred interestingly in the older version of ESX and also during an Host upgrade activity. A simple reboot did not fix the problem for me, so the solution is to get the host in to maintenance mode, disconnect and re-connect the host to the cluster, remember this is my lab host so I can play around it with it. This fixed the issue for me, if you still face the same issue. Remove the host from the cluster and add it back to the cluster, remember that by removing the host from cluster you would lose the inventory stored for the ESXi host. 🙂

ExcitedI am really excited that my blog post published for the first time in an online training site. This is my first occasion were I had written an article other than my blog. I want to take this opportunity to thank Intenseschool.com for approaching and providing me this prospect.

I have attached the link to the article below and request you to take few minutes to read and comment.

VMware Certified Professional 5 – Infrastructure as a Service (VCP5-IaaS)

VMware recently announced the VCP5-IaaS Certification, and I look forward to preparing for it.  After recently resurrecting the home lab, I     wanted to build up a demo vCloud Director (vCD) environment.  Studying for the new certification will be added motivation to do so.

Let me answer the usual question first before going into details: There is no required course for this certification.  However, you must be VCP5-certified; this should be obvious for so many reasons, but people still tend to be confused by this requirement for other certs like VCP5-DT

The VCP5-IaaS Blueprint provides the breakdown of the topics you need to master to be successful on the exam, and VMware has graciously provided a Mock Exam for would-be test-takers   Since I am not a vCD expert (yet!), I didn’t do too well on the Mock Exam. However, it serves as a great baseline from which to begin my studies.

A couple of words of caution about the Mock Exam:

1. It may not necessarily reflect what the real exam will be like.  For example, the VCP5 Mock Exam is no where near as challenging as the real VCP5 Exam.

2. If the IaaS Mock Exam is designed just like the VCP5 Mock Exam, you may not be able to continue using it if you get a perfect score.  So, make sure to read all the fine print before you start it.

In addition to studying the blueprint, VMware recommends the VMware vCloud: Deploy and Manage the VMware Cloud [V1.5] course, but, again, it is not required.

FYI, taking the course may not prepare you 100% for the VCP5-IaaS: just like none of the standard VCP5 courses prepare you for that test 100% either.  A critical component to studying for VMware’s, or any vendor’s, certification tests is to spend a significant amount of time understanding the concepts behind the technology.  If you’re anything like me, part of that process will incorporate a LOT of lab time.
